On 13 August 2012 the Senate of the Philippines approved on third and final reading Resolution No. 829 concurring in the ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC). The Resolution approving concurrence to the ratification of the MLC 2006 was sponsored by Senator Loren B. Legarda, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The Philippines is expected to submit its instrument of ratification to the International Labor Organization in the next few days to meet the requirements for full ratification.
For the Convention to enter into force, it is required that at least 30 States representing 33% of total world tonnage should ratify the Convention.
The Philippines is the 30th state and meet the finalisation of this very long ratification process.
It means that in12 months, i e after this ratification has been through the formal registration process at the ILO, MLC 2006 enters in force at the end of August 2013 or shortly after.
